The customer interview pyramid is a reminder: don't open with "Would you use this feature?" I'd start wide and only narrow when I've earned it.
How I'd climb the pyramid
- Context: role, workflow, constraints, and what "good" looks like in their world
- Problems: pain frequency, workarounds, and the cost of the status quo
- Solutions (last): reactions to concepts—only after problem clarity
If I jump to pitch mode early, I contaminate the signal. Curiosity first.
Habits that keep interviews honest
| Habit | Why |
|---|---|
| Ask about past behavior | Beats hypothetical enthusiasm |
| Silence after answers | People add the real detail |
| Dual note-taker or recording (with consent) | Memory lies |
| One interview goal | Stops wandering into roadmap theater |
I'd recruit for diversity of segment—not only friendly power users who love us. And I'd stop an interview early if I catch myself selling.
