"Product Owner" can be a real product seat—or a backlog clerk title. Your career path depends on which one you actually are. Here's how I'd think about a product owner career path.

Clarify what you own today

Ask:

  • Do I set priorities based on outcomes, or do I only groom tickets?
  • Do I talk to customers, or only to the sprint team?
  • Do I influence strategy, or only acceptance criteria?

If you're stuck in ticket admin, the path starts with expanding discovery ownership—not collecting another Scrum badge.

Paths I see work

  1. PO → Product Manager (same company or adjacent) — broaden from delivery to strategy, GTM, and metrics.
  2. PO → Senior PO / Lead on a value stream — deeper ownership in Agile-at-scale orgs that keep the PO title.
  3. PO → specialized PM — platform, data, growth, technical surfaces where your domain strength shines.
  4. PO → product ops / enablement — if you love systems, tooling, and raising org craft.
  5. PO → people leadership — Group PM / Head of Product once you've shown multi-team judgment.

Skills that unlock the next step

From → To Level-up
Delivery PO → PM Outcome metrics, roadmap narrative, stakeholder strategy
Single team → multi-team Dependency management, coherent bets
Feature PO → platform/tech Systems thinking, non-functional requirements
IC → lead Coaching, decision frameworks, hiring bar

Moves I'd make in the next 90 days

  • Own one outcome metric end-to-end (not just sprint burndown)
  • Run a discovery cadence and publish what you learned
  • Write a one-page strategy for your area; pressure-test with a peer
  • Ask for scope that includes customer contact and prioritization rights

My take

The best PO careers look a lot like strong PM careers: judgment under uncertainty, customer truth, and clear bets. Title follows scope. Build that craft with the PM Certification and the newsletter.
