There are endless data analyst certifications. Most comparison posts freeze prices and age badly. Here's how I'd compare options—and which paths I'd consider depending on your goal.

What I'd optimize for

  • Skill proof — SQL, wrangling, visualization, basic stats, stakeholder communication
  • Portfolio artifacts — can you show analysis, not just a badge?
  • Fit to role — analyst vs analytics engineer vs data-minded PM
  • Credibility for your target employers — vendor certs vs university vs practitioner programs
  • Time/cost honesty — check current pricing on the provider's site; don't trust year-old tables

Types of programs I'd put on a shortlist

Type Examples of the category Good when
Practitioner / career certs Product HQ data product paths, applied analytics certs You want job-relevant projects + narrative
Interactive learning platforms DataCamp-style tracks You need hands-on reps and momentum
Cloud / vendor certs Microsoft / AWS / Google data certs Your target stack is clear
University certificates Columbia-style / extension programs You want academic signal + structure
Vendor analytics tools SAS and similar A specific employer ecosystem asks for it

I'm intentionally not reprinting dollar amounts—go verify on their sites.

Questions I'd ask before paying

  1. Will I graduate with 2–3 sharable projects?
  2. Does the curriculum include SQL + communication of insights?
  3. Is the assessment a real exam/project or just video completion?
  4. Do alumni land roles like the one I want?
  5. Am I buying motivation theater or skill?

If you're PM-curious, not pure analyst

A pure analyst cert helps, but pair it with product sense: metrics design, decision-making, and stakeholder narrative. That's closer to data product work than chart mechanics alone.

My take

Pick the cert that creates evidence. Badge optional; proof mandatory. If you're bridging data and product, look at the Data Product Manager Certification and keep learning with the newsletter.
