The Blunt Truth

Most Product Manager job descriptions ask for “Visionaries” to spend their days in meetings, building 3-year roadmaps and perfectly polished slide decks.

That is not this job.

We are McKinney-Vento.org. We are a small ed-tech company providing critical software and training to help school districts support homeless students.

We don’t need you to invent the strategy—our leadership team has that covered. We need a Technical Operator who can bridge the gap between Engineering (managing the build), Implementation (getting clients active), and AI Innovation (automating the future).  You WILL have a seat at the leadership table, and you will be an integral part of the leadership team as we work together to set strategy.

What You Will Actually Do

1. Product Engineering & Oversight (The Build)

  • Manage the Dev: You are the direct manager for our Full-Stack Developer. You run the sprints, review the specs, and ensure we ship on time.
  • Translate Requirements: Work with sales and support to translate client pain points into structured technical requests. You ensure the dev team has clarity on scope, priority, and impact.
  • Complex Solutioning: You act as the escalation point for complex tickets. If a data issue can’t be resolved by support, you fix it.

2. Client Implementation & “The Delivery Engine”

  • Own the Implementation: You own the end-to-end process for new clients: configuration, data migration coordination, and SIS integration setup.
  • Client Success Metrics: You are responsible for client adoption. You will track usage milestones (30/90/180 days) and intervene if a district is at risk of churning.
  • Automate Onboarding: instead of manual data entry, you will build systems (or AI agents) to automate the migration and setup process.

3. Internal Enablement & Training (The Knowledge Hub)

  • Train the Team: You serve as the internal authority on product usage. You train Sales and Support on new features so they can speak confidently to clients.
  • Sales Engineering: Serve as the go-to resource for sales when answering technical inquiries or crafting product messaging for technical buyers.
  • Documentation Strategy: You oversee the creation of user-friendly training materials (videos, guides, walkthroughs). Note: We want you to use AI to generate and update this documentation automatically where possible.

4. The AI Mandate (The Future)

  • Build Internal Agents: We want to run lean. You will identify bottlenecks in our Support and Ops teams and build AI Agents to solve them.
  • Kill the Busy Work: Your goal is to reduce the manual workload on your team by deploying internal tools that automate research, data entry, and ticket responses.

Who You Are

  • The Background: You are likely a Solutions Engineer, Technical Project Manager, or Implementation Lead looking for a step up.
  • Technical Literacy: You understand data systems and APIs. You don’t necessarily need to know how to write the code, but you do know how to create user stories, test and review features, and write the documentation.
  • Facilitator & Leader: You are comfortable leading training for diverse audiences (from internal sales reps to district administrators) and managing a small team.
  • The “Automator”: You are a self-starter who thrives in fast-paced environments. If you see a repetitive task, your instinct is to automate it, not just do it.

Success Metrics (KPIs)

  • Onboarding Velocity: % of clients fully onboarded and active within target timelines.
  • Adoption Health: Client usage metrics at 90 and 180 days.
  • Internal Efficiency: Reduction in daily implementation/support tasks.
  • Engineering Throughput: Accurate, bug-free shipping of features managed by you.

How to Apply

We do not want a cover letter. We want to see how you think. Please submit your resume and a brief note answering the questions below (sent via video would be even better) to [email protected] and [email protected]:

1. “Tell us about a technical tool, automation, or process improvement you built recently to solve a specific problem. What stack/tools did you use, and why?”

2. “Our leadership sets the strategy, but often the requests are high-level. If I came to you today and said, ‘We need a new dashboard widget that shows McKinney-Vento liaisons their compliance risk score,’ but I gave you no other details… Walk me through your next 24 hours. How do you validate what to build, and physically what does the ticket look like that you hand to our Full-Stack Developer to ensure they don’t waste a week building the wrong thing?”

3. “You are monitoring our launch metrics and notice a large school district signed 45 days ago, but they are still stuck in the ‘Data Integration’ phase. They have stopped replying to our Support Specialist’s check-in emails. As the Lead on Delivery, what do you do? How do you unstuck the client personally, and what do you build to prevent this specific bottleneck from happening to the next 50 districts?”
