Summary:
The Product Development Engineer will be responsible for developing new products using finite element analysis (FEA) software to model and evaluate product design options. This position will work closely with cross functional teams to provide technical expertise on product development projects and support manufacturing through process improvements and cost reductions.
Responsibilities:
- Work in collaboration with project team members to develop new medical devices utilizing FEA software tools such as Ansys, Abaqus or equivalent.
- Perform material property research to identify optimal materials for use in new product designs.
- Conduct biomechanical testing of existing products and competitors’ products to generate product specifications and test data for use by marketing and regulatory affairs personnel.
- Analyze internal quality control and complaint data to assess product performance issues and drive corrective action efforts.
- Develop and maintain documentation related to product development activities including drawings, test reports, specifications, engineering notebooks, etc.
- Assist in establishing supplier relationships for prototyping and production needs.
- Maintain accurate records of all product development activities.
- Participate in regular meetings with project team members to review progress and make recommendations for changes to product design.
- Provide guidance to junior engineers on best practices for product development.
- Support manufacturing processes through process improvement initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or other applicable science field, with 1 year of experience required; Master’s preferred.
- Experience in finite element analysis (FEA) software tools such as Ansys, Abaqus or equivalent.
- Knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals, including mechanics of materials, structural analysis, kinematics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and stress analysis.
- Familiarity with medical device industry standards such as ISO 10993, ASTM F2992-18, IEC 60601-1-2, and UL 60601-1-2.
- Understanding of the biomechanics of joint replacement implants and their components.
- Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software.
- Experience conducting biomechanical testing using instruments such as servohydraulic load frames, goniometers, strain gauges, accelerometers, etc.
- Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross functional teams.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize workload.
- Up to 25% domestic travel.
